Some gardens have areas which are hilly or fall away into lower levels and because the garden is not flat it presents a problem as to what to do with it. Generally it can be lawned or gravel may be introduced to hide the uneven area, but why settle for that?
Divide the garden into two parts. Put a retaining wall half way back and dig out the soil from the front half and put it to the back. Put in hardcore and a drainage system and after a thorough compaction lay concrete flags or sandstone paving on both levels incorporating steps between both levels. Also the retaining wall may be clad by sticking flags to it with an adhesive.
To avoid digging out the garden a simple solution is to introduce wood decking. With some thought and a little innovation a split level decking system can be installed with features like decking steps and handrails and spindles. It does,nt have to be all decking timber either, imagine a paved patio in the decking floor as a centrepiece for dining table and chairs. Something unique can be constructed in any garden, no matter the size or shape and with the different products available an aesthetic look can be found to complement any home.
